The Commercial's History The Commercial has a long and interesting history. The Hotel has been trading in this building since 1849. That's before the Gold Rushes! If the walls could talk, there'd be some tales to tell! Originally the Daniel O'Connell Inn, a local publican and cooper, William Fowler was the first Owner. In 1853, Dr Machattie bought the Inn for 2000 Pounds. The Inn's name was changed to the Commercial Hotel around 1858 by Thomas McKell, a licencee. Other local family names with connections to the Hotel include the Quigleys and the Meltons. During the 1980's, Terry, The son of the English Channel swimmer Des Renford and his family ran a very successful live music venue. Richard and Beth purchased the Hotel in April 2002. |
